I just finished reading your article in Scientific American on the new U2 mission. Well written and very informative. The portion of your article on EMC2 caught my eye.
It brought back some memories of my early career in computing. In 1967 we were transitioning from 2nd gen to 3rd gen IBM equipment (1401/1440s to System 360 models 30 and 50). The program language of 2nd gen was incompatible with the 360. To defer having to rewrite all that code at once our 2 IBM System Engineers wrote an emulator system to run on the 360/30 and make it “look” like a 1401 to source programs. The emulator was much faster operating than the native 1401 and jokingly noted to be as fast as the “speed of light.” From there it was then labeled E=MC2, and that then became colloquially known as Ezekiel McDuece! May want to pass that on to the current EMC2 developers!
