Your Corvette article was informative, thanks.
I am writing to you about a article you published in the July/August 2018 paper about “Who knew the mail could be interesting?” You stated that “if it weren’t for 7 WWI pilots in 1921, Amazon could not overnight…..”. The significance is accurate but your time line is not. The first AirMail ‘wing’ was created in 1918 with war surplus aircraft and mostly military veteran pilots. My Uncle whom I am named after (and whose likeness and story is in the Post Office section of the Smithsonian Museum in D.C.) was Carl B Smith and was a member of that very first group. This was three years prior to the 1921 date you proffered in that article. Carl has the unfortunate distinction of being the FIRST AirMail pilot to be killed, while being the ‘test pilot’ of a DH4 at the Standard Aircraft Field, Elizabeth NJ (that was the base of operations for this new service). I have a friend in FL who is restoring a twin to that DH4 and can provide a picture if you like.
Hi Robert, to what airmail article are you referring? I wrote a piece on airmail for Popular Mechanics in May 2018 but not under the title you cited. Perhaps you have my article confused with one written by another author in another publication? I don’t mention Amazon at all in my piece.
Nevertheless, I’m glad to hear about your personal connection to the early airmail pilots and suggest you have a look at my article if you like. Just hit copy this URL – https://www.popularmechanics.com/flight/a20524415/the-history-of-airmail/
